Workplaces 'put stress on skin'

Date: 06/11/2007 12:37:11

Employees' skin is often put under intense pressure due to workplace stresses and strains, a consultancy concerned with the prevention of damage to health from workplace skin exposure has claimed.

Occupational skin disorders (OSD) including industrial dermatitis and eczema can be triggered by repeated exposure to harmful objects or chemicals, Enviroderm explained.

Very often food processing workers may suffer from dermatitis as a result of their constant exposure to water, while meat processing workers are exposed not only to water but also to blood.

Indeed, according to the publication Safety Today, chemicals in industry are responsible for 70 to 80 per cent of all cases of OSD, with symptoms varying from slight reddening and itching to a rash with intense itching.

What is more, surface damage also makes workers' skin more vulnerable to bacterial and fungal infections causing subsequent discomfort and irritation.

Chris Packham, a spokesperson for EnviroDerm, insisted that people seek advice as soon as possible and called for "greater awareness and more education" into the problem.

"Most people call for help when they've got a problem and not before," he said.

"It's a complicated business - very complex, and it isn't properly covered in many courses…if you train in occupational health very often there's very little on skin."
