Which? examines illegal teeth whitening trendDate: 27/09/2007 12:03:27

Many beauty salons in the UK are carrying out tooth whitening procedures on customers without necessary training, a Which? investigation has found.
The consumer group's report reveals a worrying number of unqualified staff using harmful chemicals on people's gums and teeth, a practice which is considered illegal by the General Dental Council (GDC).
A Which? reporter posed as a potential client at six London beauty salons, finding that none of the beauty practitioners held dentistry qualifications required for carrying out procedures to get that sought-after Hollywood smile.
Most tooth-whitening treatments use hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, both proven to bleach teeth, however three salons monitored offered a chlorine dioxide treatment instead, which is known to damage tooth enamel.
James Goolnik of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry said: "This chemical is a bleaching agent more commonly used to purify water and is very acidic. It can wreck tooth enamel."
Last year an unregistered dentist pleaded guilty at Norwich magistrates to carrying out a whitening procedure, after he burnt the gums of a dental nurse while demonstrating a product.
