Warning over 'medi-spa' treatment

Date: 14/05/2007 09:27:43

People looking for a quick cosmetic fix at a 'medi-spa' are being advised to watch out for rogue practitioners.

The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) has issued a warning concerning the rise in unregulated 'medi-spas' - health spas which offer beauty treatments such as botox injections and facial peels.

The news follows Lord Hunt's recent announcement for more self-regulation within the industry regarding non-surgical cosmetic surgery.

Spokesperson for the British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (BAPRAS) Chris Choo revealed 65 per cent of cosmetic treatments carried out in the UK are non-surgical, including treatments such as Botulinum toxin injections, filler injections and surface treatments with pulsed light and lasers.

However he added: "Although surgical procedures are subject to stringent control through existing mechanisms covering surgeons and specialist hospital providers, there is no such regulation for non-surgical procedures.

"The Department of Health's invitation to cosmetic surgery providers set up a new self-regulatory scheme is an improvement on the current situation, but it is hoped that the subsequent review process will pave the way for the introduction of more stringent measures through statutory regulation if these are found to be necessary."
