Travellers urged to get typhoid jabDate: 11/09/2007 09:33:43

With the summer season coming to an end many will have been and gone on holiday, but the Health Protection Agency (HPA) is still urging travellers to pay attention to a resurgence in UK cases of typhoid.
The agency reported that people taking holidays in exotic destinations are not all getting vaccinated against the disease, with many not even aware that the relevant vaccination is available.
The disease is life threatening if not treated rapidly, with patients suffering long recovery periods after contracting the disease.
Announcing a 69 per cent increase in typhoid cases over recent times, with enhanced surveillance of the disease since 2006, health experts at the agency expressed concern that cheaper holidays abroad were bringing many hasty travellers to areas like the Indian sub-continent unvaccinated.
In its 2007 report on foreign travel-associated illness, the HPA urged all travellers to exotic destinations to get the vaccine, also encouraging careful hygiene and water use in countries with lower sanitation standards.
Taking care with personal hygiene and food and water sanitation is always crucial, with vaccination existing for typhioid but not for the dangerous paratyphoid fever.
