Teenagers afflicted by 'junk sleep'Date: 28/08/2007 09:43:11

Increasing numbers of UK teenagers are putting their health at risk by failing to get sufficient quality sleep, researchers have concluded.
While health experts have long recommended eight hours sleep a night, one third of the 12 to 16 year olds questioned by the Sleep Council claimed to be getting between just four and seven hours.
In addition, three quarters of the youngsters questioned said that they regularly fell asleep while an electrical appliance, such as a TV or music system, was still running, leading the scientists to claim that such gadgets are fuelling poor quality "junk sleep" among teenagers.
Commenting on the findings, Dr Chris Idzikowski of the Edinburgh Sleep Centre said: "This is an incredibly worrying trend.
"What we are seeing is the emergence of 'Junk Sleep' - that is sleep that is of neither the length nor quality that it should be in order to feed the brain with the rest it needs.
"Youngsters need to be taught a healthy lifestyle includes healthy sleep as well as healthy food. The message is simple: switch off the gadgets and get more sleep."
This latest advice follows on from previous studies into sleep, which have that people who do not get sufficient amounts are more likely to develop weight problems.
