Surgeons hit out at 'boob job' competitionDate: 15/08/2007 10:07:05

A Merseyside radio station which offered breast augmentation as a competition prize has been heavily criticised by surgeons.
While a spokesman for Juice FM claimed that the female finalists had been subjected to psychological testing in order to assess whether they would be suitable for the surgery, the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) were swift to condemn the competition.
"The giving of a surgical procedure as a prize is an unbelievable, dangerous and highly unethical practice," said Adam Searle, former president of the professional body.
"The decision to perform any surgical procedure must be based on common sense, case selection, good surgical decision making and patient safety."
However, the competition's winner, a 27-year-old from Rockferry in the Wirral, has stated that she has always been unhappy with her natural figure and that surgery would boost her self-esteem.
She is due to get her bust increased from an A-cup to a double D cup at the end of this month.
Since 2001 the number of operations performed by BAAPS-registered surgeons has increased by more than 240 per cent.
