Stress is becoming an increasing part of modern life, with a growing number of Brits suffering sleepless nights as a result, new research reveals.
A poll by life assurance company CPP discovered that concerns about a range of issues, including health risks, terrorism, redundancy, climate change and identity theft, are causing people to lose sleep.
More than half of the 1,001 people surveyed said that they had lost sleep over modern issues, with 43 per cent claiming to be stressed out by soaring UK house prices.
Older Britons worry most about their health, while getting on the property ladder and paying a mortgage topped the list of stresses for those aged between 18 and 35-years-old.
Dr David Lewis, a cognitive neuropsychologist at The Mind Lab, commented: "The survey confirms high levels of anxiety are prevalent in modern society. Societal anxieties have risen sharply in the last five years and the trend looks set to continue."
Another poll by Travelodge discovered that just three per cent of adults in Britain currently get the recommended eight hours of sleep each night, with many losing sleep through stress, leaving them feeling low or depressed.
