Stress linked to increased risk of gum disease

Date: 10/08/2007 09:56:10

Scientists in South America have reported a possible link between stress and an increased risk of gum disease.

The researchers in Brazil looked into the relationship between oral health and psychological issues, including stress, distress, anxiety, depression and loneliness.

They found that there was a positive relationship between stress and gum disease in 57 per cent of all the cases they looked at.

In their conclusions, which have been published in the Journal of Periodontology, they claimed that the hormone corsitol, which has been found to be closely linked with instances of stress and anxiety, may play a role in the increased risk of periodontal diseases.

The report's author Dianne Peruzzo of the State University of Campinas in Piraciaba, Brazil, claimed that people with high stress levels are less likely to pay attention to their oral hygiene.

Furthermore, people with psychological issues may be more likely to use alcohol and nicotine, thereby further putting themselves at risk from gum disease.

The news comes after a team at Cambridge University concluded that people who are better able to cope with stress are at a reduced risk of suffering from a stroke.
