While plastic surgeons from the US have this week brought breast enlargement procedures involving newly tailored implants to Britain, a UK cosmetic surgeon has discouraged going under the knife abroad.
The Texan procedures may well be viable if offered here, but for consultant plastic surgeon Rajiv Grover, getting aesthetic surgery abroad incurs unnecessary risks.
Mr Grover underlined potential complications after surgery: "Very often you have a little niggle and then you want reassurance or maybe medical attention some weeks after the operation.
"You would then be back in the country. Under those circumstances it is very difficult to have follow-up and be looked after."
He added that it was important not to assume follow-up appointments would be simple even if remaining abroad, with a return trip to the surgeon after complications tending to "work out to be extremely expensive".
The surgeon was consequently unwilling to endorse the idea of any foreign trips for surgery, highlighting the preferable option of seeking health advice in the UK and getting operated on at home.
Aforementioned new Texan procedures require less anaesthetic by involving a more precise shaping of the implant to allow reduced incisions into the breast, a breakthrough which if implemented here would allow many the service desired without incurring the potential complications of doing it abroad.
