Students who are living on a tight budget should base their meals on starchy foods as this can be inexpensive and will nourish the brain, a spokeswoman for the British Dietetic Association has said.
Meals such as pasta may seem dull, but it is possible to vary the dish by adding different vegetables and proteins, according to Rachel Cooke.
The registered dietician said: "My advice to students would be to try and base meals on starchy foods such as breakfast cereals, oats, pasta, noodles, rice and couscous - especially whole grain forms.
"[Whole grains] release energy slowly to keep the brain working at its best and provide B vitamins and zinc for healthy skin."
Despite a recent study finding that the average female puts on 5kg in their first year at university, Ms Cooke insisted that it is important to eat regularly and to make meals as nutritious as possible.
She concluded: "The advice would be to aim for a reasonable diet and to note that the benefits of, say, eating five portions of fruit or veg a day are not replicated by replacing the fruit or veg with supplements - it just does not work like that."
