Smoking ban abroad 'a breath of fresh air'

Date: 9/1/2008 5:35:34 PM

Banning smokers from lighting up in France and Germany's cafes and bars will be a "refreshing change" for holidaymakers, a national anti-smoking charity has claimed.

Ash stated that the ban on smoking in public places will now mean that visitors to these countries will be able to socialise in a smoke-free environment.

"[Smokers' choices are] dwindling by the day anyway because more and more countries are going smoke-free and that trend will continue," Amanda Sandford, research manager for Ash, explained.

"I think it's something that people will just have to accept; it is no longer socially acceptable to smoke in an indoor public environment anywhere in the world," she added.

A law forbidding smoking in public places has now been extended to bars, cafes and hotels in France, affecting the country's estimated 13.5 million smokers.

According to figures from Ash, an estimated 70 per cent of people living in France said that they supported the smoking ban.
