Small businesses need to watch worker stressDate: 09/10/2007 09:29:31

Small business owners have been told to ensure that their employees are not suffering from harmful levels of stress by non-profit organisation the Stress Management Society.
Focusing on smaller companies rather than large firms, the organisation claimed that in close-knit office environments the effects of stress were felt more acutely, meaning that employers should pay even closer attention to it.
Neil Shah, director of the Stress Management Society advised that to avoid stress levels developing in small firms it is "important to have regular communications, whether that means regular meetings or appraisals".
He continued to affirm the importance of "just being sure that if there are any disagreements or issues that they are able to be ironed out quickly".
High levels of stress can impact negatively on individuals and on the company around them, with Mr Shah adding: "Ultimately if you don't manage stress, it can affect productivity and it can affect the efficiency of your organisation."
A report from the Health and Safety Executive for 2005-2006 found 420,000 individuals in the UK to be experiencing work-related stress sufficient to make them feel ill, with those struggling in tense environments urged to talk to a doctor and obtain the health advice they need.
