Skin 'needs protection' from wintry weather

Date: 01/10/2007 09:30:56

Skin can be protected from harsh winter weather by taking a series of simple measures, said the British Skin Foundation (BSF).

Cleansing, moisturising and remembering to remove make-up before bed are key to providing protection to the skin, which is vulnerable to the ravages of cold weather.

Indy Rihal of the BSF said: "The best way to protect your skin in all weathers, including cold temperatures, is to cleanse and moisturise. Ensure that you remove make-up before you go to bed and apply moisturiser to keep your skin from drying out."

Also recommended by the BSF was sticking to an anti-oxidant rich diet, full of vitamins C and A, in order to keep skin looking healthy and youthful, as well as boosting overall well-being.

"A healthy, balanced diet rich in anti-oxidants (contained in fresh fruits and vegetables), omega-3 fatty acids, as well as vitamin C and A is the best for general health and, therefore, healthy-looking, youthful skin," said Ms Rihal.

The vitamins in question are destroyed by exposure to light, an occurrence affecting nearly everyone, which necessitates dietary intake of foods containing these vitamins in order to obtain their boost to metabolism and cellular health.
