Silver generation going under the knife

Date: 30/05/2007 09:25:14

Doctors have seen a huge surge in popularity in cosmetic surgery from pensioners, a health care company has claimed.

Bupa has revealed an increasing number of patients now being admitted for procedures including facelifts and tummy tucks are over 60-years-old.

Indeed, the most common operations for this demographic group are betheroplasty - reduction of bags under the eyes - and face lifts, at 30 per cent and 28 per cent of patients respectively.

Dr. Sneh Khemka, associate medical director of Bupa said: "In women, about eight per cent of cases are for breast reduction. Closely following that with six per cent is abdominoplasty, which is a tummy tuck that's coupled with liposuction as well."

"The procedures that we're talking about are really purely for cosmetic purposes.

"Sometimes breast reduction surgery is done because, as you get old your spine can support less weight, and it becomes problematic to be too top-heavy. But generally speaking we're talking about purely cosmetic procedures."

Dr Khemka also revealed that non-surgical procedures are also popular amongst this generation: "Going in for a treatment of botox is not seen as such a big thing, we see it in the press and all over society these days and the silver generation are not against it."
