Sexual heath services 'must be accessible to everyone'Date: 27/06/2007 08:59:55

The provision of new sexual health services to around 50,000 people in the north-west will only be effective if they are accessible to all, a confidential sexual health advisory service has warned.
Brook Advisory Services welcomed the news that a new walk-in sexual health and family planning clinic is to be set up in Trafford under government plans for better healthcare in the region.
However, it said that in order for the service to be useful in cutting teenage pregnancies and lowering the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, the NHS must also invest money in telling young people that these facilities exist.
Chief executive of Brook, Simon Blake, said it was important that young people felt comfortable with going to these services to seek sexual health advice.
"They need to trust that it's going to be friendly when they get there - and it's got to be near enough to them and open at the right times," he said.
"We know that some young people do talk to their parents or family and friends and that is crucial - we need to help parents be more confident in talking to their children.
"But actually what they get from a sexual health service may well be advice and information right through to clinical assistance, contraception and STI screening, so it's not about an either/or, it's making sure all those different elements are in place."
The comments coincide with news that the British Medical Association is to consider making abortion more accessible.
The body will discuss proposals at its Torquay conference today, to do away with the current abortion requirements which state two approvals from doctors must be sought prior to termination in the first three months of pregnancy.
