'Search for perfection' linked to rise in surgeryDate: 25/06/2007 09:05:06

The search for a perfect body has led to a surge in the number of cosmetic surgery procedures being carried out unnecessarily, the Royal College of Surgeons in England (RCSE) has revealed.
According to the RCSE, many people now opt for plastic surgery due to purely aesthetical reasons without considering how "powerful" its effects can be in altering their appearance.
As such it advised that patients should undergo a thorough counselling process prior to going under the surgeon's knife.
Ciaran Healy, consultant plastic surgeon and plastic surgery tutor for the RCSE, said: "There is probably an increasing demand from the public to pursue cosmetic enhancement or correction.
"[Some] patients are genuinely disturbed by an aspect of their appearance - when that is corrected successfully it can have a profound effect on them… on their body image, and whole lifestyle… It is powerful stuff, cosmetic surgery."
He added that the biggest market at the moment was in anti-ageing treatments such as Botox: "Everybody wants to look perfect and nobody wants to look aged.
"I think that's the biggest market at the moment – particularly reversing the process of skin aging, there's a big market for that."
