British women will soon be benefiting from pioneering new treatments which will allow them to have breast lumps removed by their GPs in their lunch hour.
With the leading cause of benign breast lumps the over-development of tissue, scientists have developed a method of inserting a probe into the breast through a tiny incision which then freezes the appropriate cells to -40 degrees C..
The procedure, which is currently being trialled in California, could be carried out in just 15 minutes, with women walking away from their clinics with just a minor scar, which would be covered with a sticking plaster.
Dr Keith Turner from Cambridge Design Partnership, the company behind the intitaive, explained: "This breakthrough means that a woman diagnosed with a non-cancerous breast tumour can pop into her doctor's surgery, receive treatment and then get on with her day in less time than it takes to do the weekly shop.
"Many thousands of woman who have non-cancerous tumours will simply be able to pop to the doctors for a 15-minute procedure which involves having a thin probe inserted into the lump which then kills it off."
However, Martin Lee, president of the Association of Breast Surgery, stated that this type of procedure would only be effective in cases where doctors were absolutely certain that a tumour is benign.
