Organ donation 'a Christian duty'Date: 09/10/2007 12:10:51

The Church of England has given a boost to organ donation by encouraging more people to become donors.
Speaking at a House of Lords discussion about whether there should be an EU-wide stance on organ donation, the church's mission and public affairs division stated that the best use for body parts was to heal others.
It said that organ donation should be considered a Christian duty and described organ donors as a "striking example" of church values.
"Christians have a mandate to heal, motivated by compassion, mercy, knowledge and ability," it said.
"The Christian tradition both affirms the God-given value of human bodily life, and the principle of putting the needs of others before one's own needs."
Last month the government said it was looking into whether people should be automatically put on the organ donor register unless they opt out.
Currently more than 9,000 people in the UK are waiting for an organ transplant, but less than 3,000 transplants are carried out every year.
