Obese women more likely to have malformed babiesDate: 09/08/2007 09:56:43

Babies of women who are obese during pregnancy are more likely to suffer from structural malformations, including spina bifida.
The claim was made after scientists in America interviewed more than 10,000 women across eight states whose babies were born with birth defects.
Also, 4,065 women who gave birth to healthy babies were also analysed.
The team of researchers, led by Dr Kim Waller of the University of Texas found that obese mothers were twice as likely to give birth to an infant with one of seven structural birth defects, including heart defects, limb reduction, spina bifida, diaphragmatic hernia and omphalocele.
"To our knowledge, this is the first population-based study of its scale to examine pre-pregnancy obesity and a range of structural birth defects," Dr. Waller said.
The findings come after it was revealed that diet foods may actually increase the risk of obesity as a result of promoting overeating.
Children are at greater risk, scientists at the University of Alberta concluded, as their bodies are less able to assess the calorific content of food by taste.
