Nice encourages more choice in pregnancy

Date: 26/09/2007 11:40:52

Pregnant women must receive a more personalised service regarding how and where they give birth, new NHS guidelines for England and Wales state.

The government's advisory body, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice) has issued recommendations over how women should give birth.

It states that women should receive more information and support to allow them to make an informed decision on their birth preferences.

Methods of delivery including water birth should be available to all women, Nice states, as well as one-to-one care for women, and more information regarding epidural analgesia treatments.

Nice chief executive Andrea Sutcliffe said: "We want to make sure every woman's experience of birth is as good as it can be and have used the best available evidence to set a national standard on how midwives and doctors can make labour a positive experience for women."

Meanwhile, Belinda Phipps, chief executive of the National Childbirth Trust (NCT) charity, said: "This broad ranging guideline covers so much of importance to pregnant women and the NCT.

"We now want to see the health service seize this guideline and implement its recommendations so that services support and promote normality and the best possible care for women and their babies."
