New drive to cut down on MRSA levelsDate: 06/08/2007 09:35:04

Scientists in Scotland have launched a new project aimed at tackling the problem of superbugs in UK hospitals.
With recent figures revealing that almost one in ten of all patients acquire an infection during their time in hospital, the researchers at Glasgow University are to look at why and how the infections develop.
The team will also work with universities and the NHS to look at ways to stop the disease spreading.
According to Alistair Leonard, the director of the project, which has received £100,000 worth of funding from the Scottish government, tackling the problem of MRSA and other hospital-bound infections is "critical" for the well-being of the country.
The Lancet reported last week that the government is likely to miss its target of reducing the levels of MRSA infections by 50 per cent by the end of next year.
The medical journal concluded, however, that the Healthcare Commission's plans to inspect 120 NHS trusts across the country without warning over the next 12 months will work to ensure that cleanliness standards are improved.
