More Brits go under knife

Date: 21/1/2008 5:04:19 PM

Demand for cosmetic surgery has soared by almost a third since last year because it has lost its stigma, a cosmetics group has claimed.

According to Harley Medical Group, there was a 32 per cent rise in the number of people enquiring about cosmetic surgery in the first two weeks of January compared to the same period last year.

While breast surgery is still the most popular procedure, the group also revealed that there has been a 20 per cent rise in interest among men since 2006.

Liz Dale, director of the group, said: "For many of our patients, a treatment with us is now a regular feature in their diary. Non-surgical treatments are no longer seen as a luxury, more as part of their normal beauty rejuvenation and maintenance programme."

The number of people having botox injections, meanwhile, has risen by 51 per cent since last year, and there have also been large increases in the number of people opting for non-surgical facelifts and laser hair removal.

According to the poll from the Harley Medical Group, one in ten people paying for surgery work overtime to fund cosmetic surgery, while one in five ask their family, a third save up and a quarter use credit cards.
