Mixed-sex wards not good enough: government accepts

Date: 10/05/2007 09:35:34

Patients on NHS wards up and down the UK are being denied the chance to stay in single-sex wards, the government has revealed.

According to ministers, 28 NHS trusts in the UK are failing to achieve governmental targets related to the issue set in 2000, which state 95 per cent of patients should have access to single-sex accommodation.

The news follows claims by ministers that NHS managers had reported just one per cent of patients now receive treatment in mixed wards.

However a separate survey by the Healthcare Commission in March claimed this was untrue, discovering that 55 per cent of mental health inpatients were forced to share sleeping accommodation or bathrooms.

Responding to the government inquiry carried out after the Healthcare commission's results came to light, health secretary Patricia Hewitt said: "The NHS overall has an excellent record of treating people with dignity and respect.

"However, this report shows there is clearly still more work for the NHS to do to meet our commitment to eliminate mixed-sex accommodation wherever possible."

All non-emergency hospital patients should be given the chance to stay in single sex wards, campaigners into the issue claim, as mixed-sex accommodation denies patients the chance to have "privacy, respect and dignity".
