Johnson unlocks new funds for mental health

Date: 11/10/2007 09:43:59

Sufferers from stress, depression, anxiety and many other conditions may fund their prospects of receiving health advice and treatment greatly improved by new funding initiatives from the government.

Health secretary Alan Johnson has announced an increased in NHS psychological therapy spending to £170 million by 2010-11, in doing so promising a greater range of care for conditions often relegated below purely physical ailments.

Pilot 'talking therapy' schemes in Doncaster and Newham, in east London, will be given a boost of £3.7 million over two years by the funding increases, with 11 other pilot schemes also among the beneficiaries of the new resources.

Following reports that around a third of those wishing to talk to a doctor and receive psychological therapy could not, the unlocking of funds is promised by Mr Johnson to open up the treatment to 900,000 more people.

The health minister said: "More than one in six people suffer from mental health problems at any one time.

"For many people prescribing medication is a successful treatment but we know that psychological therapies work equally well."

Sainsbury Centre for Mental Health published a report earlier this year demanding further resources to build on the 'substantial achievement' of greatly increased expenditure on mental health treatment since 1999.
