Indonesian airlines on EU blacklistDate: 29/06/2007 09:01:40
|
Every Indonesian airline has been banned from entering Europe, following concerns of poor safety.
Although none of Indonesia's airlines is currently allowed to enter the UK, it is hoped the latest move will discourage holidaymakers from taking local flights to many of Indonesia's small islands this summer.
The blacklist formerly listed 91 airlines, 74 from Africa and the remainder from Kyrgyzstan.
But the new list is set to include 51 airlines from Indonesia, as well as eight from Moldova, six from Bulgaria, TAAG Angola Airlines and Volare from the Ukraine.
Airlines including operators from Bulgaria, Moldova, Angola and the Ukraine have also been prohibited entry to the EU.
Commenting on the news, an EU official said: "European citizens should avoid flying with these carriers. They are really unsafe."
The news comes after airlines in these countries were deemed to be unsafe following a string of fatal crashes.
On New Year's Day 2007 an Indonesian Adam Air plane crashed into the sea killing all 102 people on board, while another plane suffered a similar fate just a few weeks later.
