Hospital food 'repulsive'Date: 17/12/2007 11:42:36

One third of hospital patients claim that the quality of food they are dished up during their stay is unacceptable.
According to a report by consumer group Which?, one quarter of the 1,000 patients questioned claimed they relied on friends and family to bring them food as the quality of meals in hospitals was so bad.
The survey found that some food was still frozen in the middle or stuck to the plate, while people with special dietary requirements and vegetarians were not catered for.
One patient even described their food as "repulsive".
"Food is an essential aspect of making sure patients get better," Clare Corbett, health campaigner at Which?, said.
"We really need hospitals to act as beacons for healthy living and good nutrition," she added.
The watchdog has now urged the Department of Health to ensure that recent Food Standards Agency nutritional guidelines for hospitals are better adhered to.
