Healthy lifestyle equals healthy skin

Date: 22/1/2008 3:30:33 PM

A carbohydrate-rich diet could aggravate skin conditions such as acne, the British Association of Dermatologists (Bad) has claimed.

Research suggests that eating foods with a high glycaemic index (GI) such as white bread, can provoke problem skin.

However a balanced diet including plenty of fruit and vegetables may help to boost skin health.

Nina Goad, of the British Association of Dermatologists, said: "A balanced diet with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and limited processed foods will help to support the body in general, including the skin."

She also added that recent research on skin disorder had found a new skin disorder called 'smoker's acne' characterised by blocked pores and large blackheads.

This condition particularly affected adult female smokers, with some 42 per cent of smokers experiencing acne compared to only one in ten people who did not smoke.
