Healthy eating 'starts at home'Date: 13/06/2007 09:24:19

Lessons about healthy eating should "begin at home", the Association for the Study of Obesity (ASO) has claimed.
Although schools have a very important role to play in educating children in healthy eating, the prime duty of care rests with parents ASO insists.
Parents and carers should act as a role model in living healthily and transferring such knowledge down the line to their kids - however difficult it might be.
The comments come after statistics from Bupa estimate one in four 11 to 15 year olds in the UK are now classified as overweight or obese.
ASO spokesperson Dr Beckie Lang, said: "At the end of the day, a child is a parent's or carer's responsibility.
"I think schools have got a very important role to play, as have other sectors of society, but the prime duty of care lies with the parent and parents do need to be acting as good role models in terms of healthy eating - they can't expect their kids to eat healthy meals if they don't do it themselves."
Despite her concerns, Ms Lang did agree that parents were starting to become more aware of the importance of sending out positive messages to their children.
Schools are now required to provide meals with a minimum nutritional standard, while school dinners have evolved with a number of campaigns led by the School Food Trust.
