Applying gentle touching on aches could help reduce stress and pain, according to a new study from the University of Cumbria.
Three hundred people suffering from various ailments were given rubbing sessions at the centre for complementary care, in Muncaster. Each day during 40 minutes, complementary medicine experts applied light, non-invasive touches to their head, chest, arms and legs.
After six weeks, researchers saw significant improvements in patients' both physical and psychological condition. The treatment not only soothed pain and reduced stress but also increased ability to cope and their general health.
"On the basis of this sound evidence, healing by gentle touch should play a part in the treatment of people with cancer, mental health problems or a wide variety of illnesses where help with pain or stress reduction will enhance their well-being," explained Helen Leathard, professor of healing science at the University of Cumbria.
However, researchers warned that gentle touch healing must be complementary to conventional medicine but not replace it.
