'Have sex to stay healthy' over 50s urgedDate: 23/04/2007 09:36:41

Britons over the age of 50 are being urged to stay fit by incorporating 30 minutes of physical exercise, such as swimming or having sex, into their day-to-day lives.
The advice comes as part of British Heart Foundation's (BHF) new '30 a-day' campaign which aims to encourage people to fit in at least half an hour of moderate physical activity at least five days a week.
BHF's new campaign focuses on finding novel and interesting ways of keeping healthy, with a poster campaign featuring a middle-aged couple on a beach next to the words 'sex' and 'swimming', above the tagline 'Get your 30 minutes a day, any way'.
The campaign was launched after results from a recent YouGov poll on behalf of BHF found that only 30 per cent of 50-64 year olds take enough exercise per week.
Dr Mike Knapton, director of prevention and care at the BHF, said the number of people dying from inactivity was an "alarming thought".
"These deaths are avoidable and the solution is simple and achievable," he said.
"We can all make excuses, but at the end of the day it's up to individuals to make the change, to get up and to get active."
Figures from BHF state that 35,000 people, the equivalent of one person every 15 minutes, dies every year due to cardiovascular illnesses related to lack of physical activity.
