Travellers to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are being warned to ensure they have adequate travel and medical insurance for their trip.
The advice from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) comes after the implementation of a new health insurance law affecting all travellers to Abu Dhabi.
The new federal mandatory health insurance law aims to integrate Dubai and Abu Dhabi systems in one integrated scheme, following concern from UAE health insurance providers that three insurance schemes creates unnecessary confusion.
However, while this law is being finalised, travellers and expatriates are being warned to take steps to ensure they have adequate insurance cover.
The FCO is also warning travellers that, should they have an accident or become unwell during the course of their stay, they will have to cover the cost of any medical fees themselves.
Although healthcare facilities in the UAE are similar to those in the UK, the FCO has emphasised the need for comprehensive travel insurance without which access to such treatments may be completely denied.
