New mums have been advised to undertake gentle exercise following the birth of their little one to help them regain their shape and repair their bodies.
Physiotherapist for the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Women's Health, Gill Brook said that moderate physical activity can help mothers to get "back to normal".
"Things like exercising their tummy muscles and pelvic floor muscles will be encouraged from day one," she explained.
However she also advised women to exercise caution when undertaking physical activity of any kind, so as not to cause their bodies to suffer unnecessary damage.
"There's a need for a little bit for caution; the pregnancy and certainly the birth do make some areas of your body a little bit vulnerable, and certainly if you were to go back to very vigorous exercise too soon you might start to experience problems.
"Some of the ligaments that support the joints, some research has suggested that these are not back to normal even at about five months or so postnatally. So you just need to be careful."
