Gap year health tackled by clinicDate: 14/09/2007 09:49:15

With many 18 year olds ready to embark on gap year travel, September is a busy time for travel clinics across the country.
While some clinics may limit their services to immunisations, the Great Western hospital's Swindon team provides gap travellers with a range of advice and tips across a spectrum of health and safety issues.
The clinic has seen business increase dramatically since opening its doors to the general public, to whom gap travel advice is offered on both health issues and on situations of political unrest in travel destinations.
Run by the Occupational Health department the clinic is part of the Great Western Hospital, where patients enjoy largely new facilities, the hospital having opened in its new form in 2002.
The Swindon Advertiser praised the local travel clinic's gap year health education drive, with Amanda Pollitt, nurse adviser, from the Occupational Health department, explaining the care taken over individual risk assessment at her clinic.
"Each consultation is unique and tailored to the specific itinerary and needs of the individual in a calm and unrushed setting," she said.
For gap travellers and others setting out for exotic destinations it is often necessary to seek immunisation from typhoid, yellow fever and other diseases before departure, with some vaccines available from the NHS and others purchased through private clinics.
