An American programme is testing out a new way of warding off winter flu suffering gift-cards containing influenza vaccination vouchers have been made available.
Made possible by the sponsorship of vaccine manufacturer Novartis, the FluGram gift-cards will be distributed by Bartell Drugs, with recipients allowed to reserve flu vaccine shots in advance for themselves and their family.
Gift-card-holders are able to visit a designated community pharmacy in the US, where they will receive their influenza vaccination from a health professional and talk to a doctor if required.
Rajiv De Silva, president of Novartis Vaccines in the US, said: "We at Novartis Vaccines believe that caring begins with prevention and we are committed to educating and protecting as many Americans from influenza as possible by making influenza vaccination easy and accessible."
According to Cnn.com an average of 36,000 Americans die from influenza and its complications annually dangerous conditions like pneumonia can ensue from severe flu bugs.
It is claimed that October and November are the best times for obtaining the vaccination, but that a shot later in the winter can also help to stave off influenza.
