FCO issues Kenya warning

Date: 3/1/2008 1:47:05 PM

Travellers to Kenya are being warned to postpone their trip, in light of reviewed Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advice.

The department has issued a warning against all but essential travel to the African country, owing to continuing political unrest following the result of disputed elections on Sunday.

A reported 300 people have lost their lives in the violence and around 70,000 people forced out of their homes across the country since Sunday.

"We advise against all but essential travel to Kenya," FCO stated.

"There is uncertainty about the security and political situation in the country especially in the light of the massed rallies planned for January 3rd and continued unrest linked to the disputed presidential election result."

Kenyan attorney general Amos Wako has now called for an investigation into alleged vote rigging at the heart of the unease in the country, which led to president Mwai Kibaki's re-election.
