The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has advised travellers to Mexico to take care following severe flooding in parts of the country.
Around 300mm of rain has fallen in Villahermosa in just 48 hours causing what authorities are now calling the worst flooding ever to hit the state of Tabasco.
Around 70 per cent of Tabasco and 80 per cent of Villahermosa, the state capital, is underwater, it has been reported.
Officials have declared a state of emergency in the state, adding that as many as 400,000 people have been affected by the downpours.
Visitors to the area have been warned to follow the advice of the Mexican authorities to avoid putting themselves in danger.
Tourists are also being advised to keep in touch with their tour operators so they can monitor how the situation develops.
Mexican president Felipe Calderon has assured those waiting for help that the federal government would be sending aid to the hundreds of thousands of homes in Tabasco devastated by the flooding.
