Experts continue to refute stress-cancer link

Date: 17/09/2007 09:28:38

New voices have contributed to the debate over potential links between day-to-day stress and cancer development, providing further backing to those who refute any direct causality.

Dr Richard Beliveau of the Charles-Bruneau Cancerology Centre at Montreal's St Justine Hospital told the London Free Press that the popular concept of linking the two was 'groundless', referring to a host of recent studies forcefully refuting the idea.

Commenting primarily on recent Danish cancer research, Dr Beliveau highlighted a study of 11,380 parents whose children had cancer, where the stress undergone by the parents had no bearing on their own cancer risk.

Also confronting the popular idea that breast cancer risk is particularly increased by stress, he backed studies showing that women suffering stressful events such bereavement, divorce or professional failure were not any more prone to breast cancer.

Cancer Research UK was also in agreement, with the organisation continuing to refute the link and even forwarding the possibility that by lowering oestrogen levels, high-level stress may even lower the risks of breast cancer development.

Meanwhile, the organisation claimed that if any causal link between stress and cancer were to exist, it would be smaller than the effect on development of the disease by other factors such as lifestyle, age or family history.

Dr Beliveau's statements then come as further comfort to those encountering stressful situations at home or at the workplace, adding to the body of experts seeing no direct link between stress and cancer.
