Exercise reverses muscle ageing, study suggestsDate: 25/05/2007 10:00:50

Regular exercise can help your body stay younger for longer, recent research has shown.
Research carried out on a group of 25 people of over-65s found resistance training twice a week during six months helped muscles stay younger.
At the end of the experiment each one of them had acquired extra muscular strength and well as an increase in levels of mitochondria, known to power muscle cells.
The muscle strength of older adults who took part in the exercise programme increased by 50 per cent, the study found.
Commenting on the outcome of the research Dr Simon Melov, of McMaster University Medical Centre in Canada, who conducted the study for the Buck Institute said: "We were very surprised by the results of the study.
"We expected to see gene expressions that stayed fairly steady in the older adults.
"The fact that their 'genetic fingerprints' so dramatically reversed course gives credence to the value of exercise, not only as a means of improving health, but of reversing the aging process itself, which is an additional incentive to exercise as you get older," he added.
