Exercise levels 'underestimated'Date: 10/10/2007 11:49:39

Many Britons are underestimating the levels of exercise they need to do to stay healthy due to "misleading" government guidelines, a new report claims.
A survey carried out by researchers at Exeter and Brunel universities found that 56 per cent of men and 71 per cent of women believed that moderate exercise was better for their health than a vigorous work-out.
Current government guidelines advise the Britons take 30 minutes of moderate exercise five days per week, however the report's authors say that vigorous exercise is better for reducing the chances of developing diseases.
"It's extremely worrying that British adults now believe that a brief stroll and a bit of gardening is enough to make them fit and healthy," Dr Gary O'Donovan, lead author of the study, said.
"Brisk walking offers some health benefits, but jogging, running and other vigorous activities offer maximal protection from disease," he advised.
