Eating well 'helps' fight off depressionDate: 25/09/2007 08:51:10

Depression can be fought back by a healthy, balanced diet, according to mental health charity Changes.
The charity claims that nutrition alone cannot guarantee halting the onset of depression, but can put people in the best possible position for fighting it off.
General well-being is part of a holistic approach to fighting depression taken by Changes, with a regular intake of fruit and vegetables helping to give many potential sufferers a healthier, more positive outlook.
"Having the right balance, in terms of nutrition, can help keep you in top form and stop you getting in to depression," said Mark Lowndes, area manager of Changes.
He added: "It's not just about eating healthy food or taking a few multi-vitamins that's going to cure you. It is a long process, but I believe [diet and nutrition] can have an effect on it."
Depression is a very common problem, largely defined as a medical condition when someone constantly experiences negative feelings which do not go away and start to affect all areas of life.
Eating well is one way to boost bodily well-being and fight off negative feelings, but other treatments for depression involve the prescription of the family of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor drugs known as anti-depressants.
