Keeping slim through a balanced diet, frequent exercise and cutting back on processed meats could help to cut a person's risk of developing cancer, a new study claims.
A report on the link between cancer, diet, exercise and weight by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) states that people should try to maintain a healthy weight, preferably at the lower end of the healthy weight range.
The WCRF claims that research carried out on 7,000 previous studies from around the world on cancer and lifestyle showed that there was "convincing" evidence to link excess body fat with various types of the disease.
It also stated that people should try to steer clear of eating processed meats such as ham and bacon as they are linked to bowel cancer.
Professor Martin Wiseman, project director for the report, described the findings as a "real milestone in the fight against cancer".
"[The report's] recommendations represent the most definitive advice on preventing cancer that has ever been available anywhere in the world," he added.
"If people follow our recommendations they can be confident they are following the best advice possible based on all the scientific research done up to this point."
According to Cancer Research UK, colorectal cancer is currently the second most common cause of death in the UK at ten per cent of all cancer deaths.
