Britons desperate for the perfect body are set to spend a staggering £1 billion on surgery in 2008, a new study shows.
According to market analysts Mintel, Britons are going under the surgeon's knife more than ever, undergoing 577,000 cosmetic treatments in the UK last year - up on the 300,000 recorded in 2005.
Non-surgical procedures such as Botox and collagen wrinkle fillers have also experienced a boom in popularity with numbers more than doubling from 230,000 to 472,000 over the past two years.
Other non-invasive treatments such as laser hair removal, teeth whitening and chemical peels have also proved popular, while facelifts and breast surgery account for the two most popular surgical treatments.
Mintel senior cosmetics analyst Alexandra Richmond said: "Today, the British perception of beauty is based on airbrushed images of models and photos of surgically enhanced celebrities, both young and old.
"For many the natural look simply can't compete and leaves them feeling inadequate."
Mintel's research shows the total cosmetic surgery market is now worth just over £900 million.
