Children need more fat for energy, scientists confirmDate: 16/08/2007 10:36:34

Children burn substantially more fat than adults relative to their calorie intake, US researchers have found.
While parents may worry about fatty foods leading to childhood obesity, the scientists at Pennsylvania State University concluded that a third of a child's energy intake should be made up of fat, supporting the existing UK recommendations.
Despite the sedentary lifestyle of all the participants in the study, the children burned substantially more fat during the testing relative to the amount of energy they used, though they did not use up more fat in total.
Commenting on the findings, the National Obesity Forum stated: "I think this research is absolutely right.
"Young children need more fat and energy for the whole purpose of growing and living.
"To give them low-fat and sugar-free products is a bad idea."
A recent NHS report cited in the Observer predicted that half of 6 to 10 year-old boys will be obese by 2050 should the current trend continue.
