Mothers-to-be have been given a boost by baby charity Tommy's, which claimed that antenatal care is now good enough to have dramatically reduced risks to mother and baby.
According to Tommy's the risks associated with ignorance of what pregnancy and childbirth entailed have been hugely reduced by better instruction, with all measures in place for those wishing to receive medical advice and testing.
Andrew Shennan, professor of obstetrics for Tommy's, said: "As soon as you're pregnant you go and see your local GP and they will arrange for you to contact the local delivery unit."
Mr Shennan added that at this stage "you will meet a midwife who will arrange a bunch of tests like blood and urine and blood pressure and so on".
Adding that tests were not compulsory, Mr Shennan explained that understanding of the risks in pregnancy and the need for care meant that most people did talk to a doctor and seek the necessary support.
While pregnancy care has improved dramatically in the UK and other wealthier countries, there is still a high incidence of fatalities in mother and child elsewhere.
