Consumers commonly know how to reduce their risk of heart disease, but many are unaware of the risk factors for stroke, a UK charity has said.
The Stroke Association is seeking to raise awareness of the health problem, which is currently the third most common cause of death in England and Wales.
A spokeswoman for the charity revealed that keeping your weight down is important for avoiding stroke, as is eating plenty of fruit, vegetables and whole grains.
"We know that being overweight can increase your risk of having a stroke. Carrying extra weight around your waist is particularly important, because that might increase the risk of stroke, heart disease and some cancers by up to three times," she revealed.
"More specific to diet, it's estimated that five portions of fruit and vegetables a day could reduce strokes by 26 per cent," she continued, adding that three servings of wholegrain food can nearly halve your risk.
Consumers are also advised to exercise regularly and avoid smoking.
