Catalogue plastic surgery sales prompt outcry

Date: 09/07/2007 08:45:47

Plastic surgery experts have expressed their fears over the sale of cosmetic surgery through a UK clothing catalogue.

Botox and other non-surgical treatments are being sold through the Grattan catalogue alongside the latest fashions.

The mail-order company is now offering customers the chance to pick up lip enhancement surgery and skin peel treatments, in conjunction with the Transform Cosmetic Surgery company, that can be paid off in instalments

But plastic surgery experts have criticised the sale in light of recent concerns about the misuse and growing popularity of Botox in the UK.

British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (Baaps) president and consultant plastic surgeon, Douglas McGeorge, said: "I'm surprised that any cosmetic surgery company claiming to provide quality of care would choose to market through a clothing catalogue.

"It is essential the public understand that aesthetic procedures, even if they are non-surgical, are not commodities to buy off-the-shelf and cannot later be exchanged for a different style or size.

"Side effects from injectables may be rare but they do happen, and the latest warnings from manufacturers serve to highlight the need for proper consultation and thorough informed consent by the patient."

However, Transform have hit back at the claims insisting: "The partnership with Grattan is an effective means of widening the non-surgical market".

It added that its service is "regulated and audited" by the Healthcare Commission working alongside qualified medical staff.
