Cancer patients hit by higher travel premiums

Date: 22/05/2007 09:23:38

People who are recovering from or now completely free of cancer are paying much higher insurance premiums to travel abroad, a study has found.

According to research from Macmillan Cancer Support, cancer patients had been quoted two or three times the actual amount of their holiday, with others asked insensitive questions about their current state of health.

Two in five people were quoted for much higher travel insurance than if they had not had the disease, while some six per cent of former cancer patients were completely refused travel insurance altogether, the charity found.

The research found a further eight per cent went on holiday without any form of travel insurance at all.

The news comes as the charity launches its Recovered But Not Covered campaign which aims to help people get a better deal on their travel insurance, as well as target insurance companies to review the insurance risks of those affected by cancer in their lifetimes.

Ayesha Owusu-Barnaby, head of campaigns and public affairs at Macmillan, said: "Hundreds of people contact Macmillan about travel insurance every month.

"Most people live long and active lives after cancer and that's why Macmillan is calling on the travel insurance industry to look again at the risk posed by people affected by cancer and improve the deal offered to them."

Writing on Macmillan Cancer Support's discussion web forum on the topic, 'Booth' told how getting travel insurance for her husband who had been diagnosed with the disease "was not very easy".

She continued to say that she had eventually found an insurance provider willing to offer lower premiums but added: "We have been quoted some very high prices believe me".
