Bug hits holidaymakers in Caribbean resort

Date: 08/08/2007 09:33:00

Hundreds of British holidaymakers have been trapped in their Caribbean after an outbreak of sickness hit their resort.

Several Britons are currently in hospital in the Dominican Republic with sickness and diarrhoea while many more are confined to their rooms after being struck down with the bug, believed to be amoebic dysentery.

In addition, people have claimed that they are effectively being quarantined by the staff at the four-star Bahia Principe San Juan resort in order to contain the outbreak.

This latest outbreak comes after around 25 British guests were struck down with a bug at the same resort in June.

Speaking to the Sun, a daughter of one of the holidaymakers trapped in the Caribbean said: "The situation is horrendous. People are being sick everywhere, getting better, then being struck down again.

"My parents are locked in a room because they are frightened of catching this bug."

This latest incidence of British holidaymakers having their trips ruined by a bug comes after passengers on a cruise ship in Scandinavia were hit down with Legionnaires' Disease earlier this summer.
