Brits heading abroad to go under knifeDate: 19/04/2007 09:13:51

Britons spent a massive £60 million last year on cosmetic surgery, operations and post-operative relaxation abroad, the results of a new survey have shown.
According to the report by Mintel, so-called medical tourism is on the up, with 12 per cent admitting they would head overseas to go under the knife.
The main reason cited was the cheaper prices for operations in foreign countries compared with the UK.
Additionally, a quarter of people said they would consider going overseas to recuperate after going into hospital for an operation.
Experts predict the trend to continue, with sales in this area set to increase by 150 per cent by 2011.
Richard Cope, senior travel analyst at Mintel, said: "Tired of the fly and flop package deals, they are opting for spa holidays, holistic breaks or in some cases a medical break for a session of cosmetic surgery or dentistry.
"Although this is a niche market, health and wellness holidays are steadily growing into a high-value business, with the average cost of a trip well in excess of the holiday market norms.
Mintel's report also revealed Britons spent around £25 million on yoga holidays, holistic healing, health farms, beauty visits and spa treatments in the last year alone.
