Britons unaware of lifestyle links to cancerDate: 14/08/2007 10:03:25

Almost half of UK adults are unaware about the link between a poor diet and the increased likelihood of cancer, researchers have found.
In a survey of 2,000 people undertaken by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) recently, 53 per cent claimed that they were unaware that being overweight may lead to an increased risk of developing some cancers.
In addition, just 35 per cent of those questioned knew that alcohol intake has been found to have a link with cancer.
According to a number of past studies, women who are overweight or obese are twice more likely to develop womb cancer than those of a healthy weight, while weight has also been linked to kidney cancer.
Dr Greg Martin, a science and research manager for WCRF, said: "It really is a shame that so many people are not aware enough about how they can reduce their cancer risk."
The findings come just days after Cancer Research UK revealed that there had been a growth in the number of new cases of cancers linked to smoking, obesity or exposure to the sun, despite increased publicity surrounding the disease.
